Minister for Health and Children Ms Harney ; : My Department is working closely with the Health Service Executive HSE ; and the National Development Finance Agency NDFA ; to progress the National Radiation Oncology Plan announced by Government in July 2005. The plan consists of large centres in Dublin at Beaumont and St. James's Hospitals ; , Cork and Galway and two integrated satellite centres at Waterford Regional Hospital and Limerick Regional Hospital. The NDFA has assembled a team to progress the financial and procurement aspects and the HSE has appointed a Project Manager and support team. A Clinical Output Specification Group is well advanced in specifying the clinical aspects of the development. Technical advisors will be appointed shortly to advise on the construction and other technical aspects of the project. I have also appointed the Chairman of St. Luke's Hospital to chair a National Radiation Oncology Oversight Group to advise me on progress on the implementation of the plan. I have approved the provision of two additional linear accelerators at St. Luke's Hospital to provide much needed interim capacity pending the roll out of the national plan. I expect these services to commence late next year. I recently also announced the approval of two radiation oncology facilities at Beaumont and St. James's Hospitals, comprising of two linear accelerators and associated treatment planning at each site, to be delivered in early 2009. These are key elements of the delivery of the National Plan. The HSE has advised my Department that its planning and procurement processes, which have been developed in conjunction with the NDFA, are designed to ensure the earliest possible delivery of radiotherapy nationally, including at Waterford Regional Hospital. Potential providers will be asked to specify detailed delivery timescales for all sites as part of the competitive bidding process. While the HSE has developed indicative timelines for planning purposes, it considers, for commercial reasons, that this information should not be made public at this stage in the process. The antiproliferative effect of red wine concentrate, its total polyphenolic pool, and the purified polyphenols catechin CAT ; , epicatechin EPI ; , quercetin QUE ; , and resveratrol RES ; were studied using hormone-sensitive MCF7 and T47D and hormone-resistant MDA-MB-231 cells in vitro. The total polyphenolic pool showed a greater inhibitory effect compared with the red wine concentrate. The polyphenols doseand time-dependently inhibited cell proliferation with the MCF7 and T47D cells being more sensitive than the MDA-MB-231 cells. The polyphenols generally increased the resistance of T47D and MCF7 cells to hydrogen peroxide H2O2 ; toxicity and inhibited PMAinduced reactive oxygen species production in T47D cells. The results suggest that moderate wine consumption or other food and beverage rich in antioxidant phenols may have a protective effect in breast cancer. 2 Days of incubation with desalcoholized red wine dose-dependently inhibited the cell proliferation of MCF7, T47D, MDA-MB-231 human breast cancer cell lines. At high wine concentrations 1 10 ; , a stimulation of cell proliferation was observed. The inhibitory effect was more pronounced after 5 days of incubation and the stimulatory effect was not seen. The total polyphenolic pool showed a more potent inhibitory effect on the 3 cell lines. MCF7 and T47D were more sensitive to the polyphenols than MDA-MB-231 IC50 of 0.14, 0.09, and 1.3 at day 2, and 0.16, 0.9, and 0.23 at day 5, respectively ; . All polyphenols dose-dependently inhibited cell proliferation, an effect being more pronounced on day 5. Except for RES on MCF7, all the polyphenols showed a greater inhibition of MCF7 and T47D than MDA-MB-231. In MCF7, QUE and CAT displaced estradiol from its receptors at the range, while RES and EPI interacted at the nM range. RES and CAT interacted with progesterone receptors at the pM, while QUE and EPI at the nM range. In T47D cells, only RES and EPI interacted with estrogen receptors nM and range, respectively ; and RES and QUE with progesterone receptors. No steroid binding was seen with MDA-MB-231. The polyphenols did not protect MDA-MB-231 from H2O2 toxicity. All polyphenols produced a higher resistance of T47D cells to H2O2. In the MCF7 cell line, all polyphenols except for EPI increased the resistance of the cells to the action of H2O2 by 5 times. The polyphenols inhibited PMA-induced reactive oxygen species production in T47D cells. RES and QUE were the most potent inhibitors and colesevelam.

Hanemann, Clinical Neurobiology, Peninsula Medical School, The John Bull Building, Tamar Science Park, Research Way, Plymouth, PL6 8BU, UK. E-mail: oliver.hanemann pms.ac Alterations in the NF2 gene coding for merlin cause all tumours that occur in patients suffering from neurofibromatosis type 2, all spontaneous schwannomas and the majority of meningiomas. Thus merlin's tumours are quite frequent and also numerous when inherited as part of meurofibromatosis type 2. T umours caused by mutations in the NF2 gene are benign and thus do not respond to classical chemotherapy. Surgery and radiosurgery are only local therapies and the patients frequently require multiple treatments. This highlights the medical need to understand how merlin loss results in tumourigenesis and the need to find new systemic therapies. The benign, and therefore genetically stable and homogenous character of the tumours allows establishment of meaningful tumour models. This brings about the rather unique opportunity to both analyse the consequences of the gene defect and identify new therapeutic targets. In this review, I will first describe the phenotypes associated with `merlin' mutations and consider differential diagnosis, in particular Schwannomatosis, for which a gene defect has been described recently. Existing therapeutic options, surgery and radiosurgery, including new data on the latter will be reviewed. Finally, I will discuss how loss of merlin leads to tumourigenesis in order to understand the rationale for emerging new therapeutic targets. Review: The author is one of the mostpublished people I know. Here, he analyses the art of conference-going, with reference to Shakespeare's `As you like it'. He describes the problems of huge American mega-meetings, with the ability to get to only a small minority of presentations. There are also some pithy observations on computer glitches, and the seven ages of man. Comment: A good read if, like me, you're in mid career, and want a wry look at conference-going. His parting tip stay in the coffee shop and enjoy the process. 25-426 A systematic review and meta-analysis of clinical trials on physical interventions for lateral epicondylalgia. Summary This final chapter touches on possible future developments at Cognex, which, if they occur, will be summarized in forthcoming issues of the Bob's Notes series on Cognex Corporation. Fiber Optics Industry Analysts are predicting that the market for fiber optic-related communications equipment will grow from .6 billion in 1999 to billion in 2003. The fiber optics industry represents an exciting area of potential growth for Cognex because it is large and because it currently lacks.but could strongly benefit from.assembly automation. During 2000, Cognex formed a special Fiber Optics Team aimed at analyzing and then meeting the automation needs of this new industry. Manufacturing of fiber optic cables and related components is now almost entirely manual; each individual fiber is polished, inspected, aligned, and inserted by hand. Machine vision can be effectively used to automate a wide range of these tasks, and several fiber optics manufacturers and producers of automation equipment have already contacted Cognex to explore the opportunity of using its Machine Vision Systems to increase both throughput and yield and comfrey.

It has been found that under optimum condition pH 7.00 ; in cyclic voltammetry, the oxidation of D-PA occurred at a potential about 300 mV less positive than that unmodified carbon paste electrode. The electrocatalytic oxidation peak current of D-PA showed a linear dependent on the D-PA concentration and linear calibration curves were obtained in the ranges of 6.010-5 M 1.610-3 M and 7.010-6 M 2.3 10-4 M of D-PA concentration with cyclic voltammetry CV ; and differential pulse voltammetry DPV ; methods respectively.
